He was the son of George Clamp a coal miner, born 1859 in Donisthorpe, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1861 in Donisthorpe, Leics. Louis Matkin was born in 1895 in Donisthorpe, Leics., his siblings were, Sarah E., born 1884, Thomas D., born 1885, Alice, born 1890 and Elsie, born 1899, all his siblings were born in Donisthorpe, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 2, Jubilee Terrace, Oakthorpe and Donisthorpe, Leics. In April 1911 Louis was a coal mine pony boy and was residing in the family home at Seals Road, Donisthorpe, Leics., together with his widowed father and sisters, Alice and Elsie. Inside the church of St. John the Evangelist is a private memorial plaque erected by his father showing that his son was killed in action in France, aged 22.The War Diary for today records. GORRE OUTPOSTS. Day quiet. Patrols from No.1 Coy ran into enemy with machine gun at corner of EPINETTE EAST POST and lost Sgt CLAMP and 1 other rank killed. Snipers also active and accurate in RUE DE L’EPINETTE. Enemy seems to intend to hold his present line in this direction. Enemy also occupied orchard 200 yards north of our left piquet along the SLOANE SQUARE ROAD in considerable strength. Exact position of the enemy on the RUE DE BOIS not known except that he is in strength on east side of LOISNE RIVER.
