He was the son of John Berridge an Agricultural Labourer, born 1837 in Cottesmore, Rutland and his wife Catherine, born 1841 in Ketton, Rutland. Herbert was born in 1883 in Cottesmore, Rutland, his siblings were Joseph, born 1870, William, born 1872, Leland, born 1874, George, born 1876 and Agnes born 1878, the latter five siblings were all born in Langham, Rutland, Alfred, born 1882 in Cottesmore, Rutland, in April 1891 the family home was at Cottesmore, Rutland. In March 1901 Herbert was employed as an Agricultural Labourer and was residing in the family home at Bussick House, Cottesmore, Rutland together with his parents, his brother Leland, and his married sister Agnes Chamberlain, also residing with the family was his brother in law William Chamberlain, born 1869 in Cottesmore and his nephew George W. Chamberlain, born 1900 in Cottesmore, Rutland. In April 1911 Herbert was employed as a Labourer and was residing with his wife of two years, Margaret a Laundress, born 1887 in Barmouth, Merionethshire, North Wales, they had two children, Jenny, born 1910 and Kitty, born 1910, both children were born in Oakham, Rutland, also residing in the family home was his sister in law Lizzie Morris, born 1891 in Barmouth, Merionethshire, North Wales, the family home was at Simper Street, Oakham, Rutland.
