He was the son of Alfred Joyce, a builder and publican, born 1859 in Glaston, Rutland and his wife Fanny, born 1862 in North Luffenham, Rutland. Nevil Edmund Joyce was born on the 25th October 1892 in Morcott, Rutland , his siblings were, Nora Mildred, born 1885 and Fred Harold, born 1886, the latter two siblings were both born in North Luffenham, Rutland, Owen James, born 1888 and Hilda Kate, born 1890, the latter two siblings were both born in Morcott, Rutland, also residing with the family was his cousin Eva Whitworth, born 1900 in Gretton, Northants., in March 1901 the family home was at The Blue Bell Inn, Main Street, Morcott, Rutland. In April 1911 Nevil was employed as a mason and labourer and was residing in the family home at Morcott, Rutland together with his widowed mother and siblings, Owen, a house keeper and builder and Hilda, also residing with the family was his cousin Eva, a schoolgirl and his widowed paternal grandmother, Caroline Joyce, born 1831 in Glaston, Rutland. Nevil later became a baker by trade. His first name was officially recorded at birth as Nevil, but he adopted the spelling Neville. Nevil enlisted into the Royal Air Force on the 22nd October 1918 for the duration of the war and was allocated the service number 308480. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 9¼ inches in height and he had a chest measurement of 32½ inches. His complexion was described as ruddy and his hair colour was medium brown, his eyes were blue. It was noted that he had a mole on his left collar bone. He gave his date and place of birth as the 25th October 1892 in Morcott, Rutland, his trade or calling as baker, and his religion as Church of England. He gave his sister, Mrs Kate Whitworth, Gretton, near Kettering, Northants., as his next of kin. His record of service shows that he joined the Recruit Depot as a Private II on the 22/10/18 – 8/11/18, when he died in the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham, Kent. Prior to enlistment he had been an Army Reservist.
