He was the son of James and Sarah Ann Dodge. The War Diary entries for the 3rd to the 5th May 1917 record. ROCLINCOURT. The 1st KING’S LIVERPOOL REGT relieved the 1st ROYAL BERKSHIRE REGT at 1.00am May 3rd and later moved to Left Support as indicated. Brilliant moonlight. Germans put down a violent bombardment on Front and Support trenches, inflicting casualties and delaying the forming up. The attack was made at 2.45am and the final objective gained. Owing to attack on OPPY WOOD and village, on right, failing, the enemy was enabled to make repeated counter attacks and finally penetrated left flank of attack. Shortly after midnight May 3rd/4th, the Composite Brigade was relieved by the 1st ROYAL WEST KENT REGT and the 14th ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGT (5th Division) and on May 5th the Company rejoined the Battalion at ROCLINCOURT CAMP G.4.d.2.1. (51.B.N.W.). Casualties in action May 3rd, 7 killed, 1 died of wounds, Lt. BULL wounded, 15 men wounded and 8 missing. Our total casualties during tour of duty in 2nd Division sector from April 11th to May 1st were Captain W. A. SIMMONDS, 2nd Lt’s. H. JOHNSON and J. S. SMITH and 15 killed. Lt. T. H. SEARLES and 122 wounded, 2nd Lt’s. C. W. BLOOMFIELD and R. S. O’ CONNOR and 70 missing.
3-5-5-17. Company training carried out.
4-5-17. Working party detailed to bury 2 horses for a French farmer.
5-5-17. Major C. E. R. G. ALBAN, 1st KING’S LIVERPOOL REGT assumed command Officer Commanding Battalion vice Lt. Col. G. DAWES M.C., wounded 22/4/17; Major J. J. CAMERON relinquished temporary command. Battalion moved from BRAY F.20.a.8.5. (51.C.N.E.) at 2.00pm and marched via MAROEUIL and cross country track to ROCLINCOURT CAMP G.4.d.2.1. (51.B.N.W.). Move complete at 4.45pm. Working parties provided on ensuing days till May 7th on road making BAILLEUL ROAD, under supervision of 12th SHERWOOD FORESTERS.
