He was the husband of Elizabeth Annie Smith. The War Diary for the 23rd October 1914 records. Attacks more or less all day. A very vigorous attack in the evening, but it was repulsed – Our casualties in the three days 22nd, 23rd and 24th were Captain’s RUSSELL, BENTLEY, POCHIN R.A.M.C. killed. Captain’s POWELL, POPE, Sir F. U. L. ROBINSON, Lt’s. NEEDHAM, EDEN wounded.

John's wife was Elizabeth Annie Smith. They were married in Market Bosworth in 1912 and had a daughter Ethel. Elizabeth is buried in Mountsorrel cemetery.
