He was the son of Frank Turlington, a framework knitter, born 1866 in Mountsorrel, Leics., and his wife Ellen (Martha Elizabeth? Emma?) Turlington (nee Nottingham, married in the 2nd quarter of 1884 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leics. district), born 1867 in Mountsorrel, Leics. George Bertram was born on the 16th of February 1889 in Mountsorrel, Leics., his siblings were, Joseph Frederick, a schoolboy, born 1885 and Winifred Ellen, a schoolgirl, born 1886, both his siblings were born in Mountsorrel, Leics., also residing with the family was a widow Martha Ayre, who was living on her own means, born 1814 in Cossington, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Main Street, Mountsorrel, Leics. In March 1901 George was employed as a shoe shop errand boy and was residing in the family home at Main Street, Mountsorrel, Leics., together with his father, a framework knitter, his mother and siblings Joseph, a shoe trade riveter and Winifred a Griswold worker. In April 1911 George was employed as a market gardener’s drayman and was residing in the family home at South End, Mountsorrel, Leics., together with his father, a hosiery frame operator, his mother, a dressmaker and his siblings, Joseph, a boot and shoe trade riveter and Winifred, a hosiery trade Griswold operator. The family later resided at 153, Leicester Road, Mountsorrel, Leics. The background relating to the circumstances in which George lost his life are as follows: On the 16th November 1917, SS. Garron Head was on a voyage from Bilbao to Barrow and Maryport with a cargo of iron ore, when she was attacked and sunk by the German submarine U-103, captained by Claus Rucker, at a position 40 miles North by East of Bayonne, with the loss of 28 lives.
