He was the son of George Broad a hawker, born 1861 in Leicester and his wife Rose a hawker, born 1862 in Leicester. Walter was a scholar and was born in 1884 in Leicester, in April 1891 he was residing at 7, Royal East Street, Leicester, being the home of his maternal grandparents, William Bassford a poultry dealer, born 1824, and his wife Fanny, born 1824, both grandparents were born in Leicester. In March 1901 Walter was employed in the shoe trade and was residing in the family home at 38, Spalding Street, Leicester, together with his widowed mother, now an umbrella repairer and hawker, his paternal uncle, William Broad, born 1871 in Leicester and his widowed paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Broad, born 1832 in Leicester. In April 1911 Walter was serving as a Lance Sergeant boot maker and repairer, with the Coldstream Guards, and was residing in the family home at 125, Coulsdon, Caterham, Surrey, together with his wife Nellie, born 1883 in Mountsorrel, Leics., and who was the daughter of Harry Rudkin of 170, Main Street, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire who he married in St. Peter’s Church, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire in August 1910, they had two children Walter born 20th October 1914 and May born 2nd May 1912. Walter was educated in Leicester and served with the 3rd Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment in the South African War, he was awarded the Queen’s Medal with two clasps “Cape Colony” and “South Africa 1902”. He enlisted in the Coldstream Guards on the 8th August 1904, was promoted Lance Corporal 3rd October 1905, Corporal 5th January 1909, Sergeant and Sergeant Shoemaker 26th July 1913. He served in Egypt from the 29th September 1906 until the 20th October 1908 and with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the 12th August 1914 until he was killed in action at the Battle of Mons on the 16th September 1914.
On Wednesday, October 28th, 1914, The Leicester Daily Mercury published the following article on page 7, (A photograph accompanied the article). – Sergt. Walter Broad, 3rd Coldstream Guards, who was killed in action in France. Sergt. Broad’s home was in Lancaster-street, Green-lane-road, North Evington.
