He was the son of William Bruce a shoe maker, born 1860 in Stoke Albany, Northants., and his wife Ann M., born 1861 in Bruntingthorpe, Leics. John Albert was born in 1897 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a brother Herbert William, born 1894 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 55, Southampton Street, Leicester. In April 1911 John was a scholar and was residing in the family home at 97, Southampton Street, Leicester, together with his parents and brother Herbert.
