He was the son of James and Ellen Jones of Wilmslow, Ches., and the husband of Sarah Lily Jones. His sister Mrs M. Hatton resided on the Berlin Estate, Heidelberg, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. His enlistment documents record that he gave his wife, Sarah Lily Jones of 31, Myrtle Street, Heidelberg, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia as his next of kin, and that he had two children. He gave his trade or calling as Bricklayer. The next of kin address was later changed to Holly Cottage, Muston, Bottesford, Nottinghamshire, England. He stated that he had previously served as a Bugler with the 5th Cheshire Volunteers and left when they converted into a Territorial Unit. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 10 inches in height, weighed 12 stone 6 pounds and had a chest measurement of 38 ½ to 39 ½ inches. His complexion was described as fair with blue eyes and fair hair. It was noted that he had a scar over his left eye. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service gives the following information. At Kantara, Egypt, charged with committing a nuisance, awarded 1 days detention 31st December 1915. At Ferry Post, Egypt charged with being absent from parade and breaking camp, awarded 1 days detention 7th January 1916. Proceeded to join the B.E.F. from Alexandria, Egypt aboard “City of Edinburgh” 19th March 1916. Disembarked Marseilles, France 27th March 1916. Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, France sick with gastritis 20th April 1916. Discharged and rejoined unit 30th April 1916. Admitted to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, France sick with indigestion 4th July 1916. Discharged and rejoined unit 5th July 1916. Admitted sick to hospital Belgium 22nd October 1916. Transferred to 30th General Hospital, Calais, France, B Details influenza 4th November 1916. Discharged and rejoined 6th Field Company Engineers, Etaples, France 25th November 1916. Rejoined unit 27th November 1916. Killed in action 1st December 1916. War Pensions were awarded as follows, Sarah Lilian Jones (widow) 40 shillings per fortnight commencing 20th February 1917, Lilian Elizabeth Jones (daughter) 20 shillings per fortnight commencing 20th February 1917 and expires on the 28th June 1928. The personal effects returned to his widow comprised, two brushes and a leather cover for writing material, letters and card.
