He was the step son of Arthur Smith, a railway platelayer, born 1874 in Thorpe Acre, Leics., and his wife Mary Ann Smith (nee Kirton, married 1897), born 1868 in Muston, Leics. William Pollard Kirton, was employed as a commercial messenger, and was born in 1896 in Edwalton, Notts., in April 1911 the family home was at Muston, Notts. On Friday November 9th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS.” – The following local casualty was included in the official list published on Friday:- KILLED.- SHERWOOD FORESTERS. Kirton, 201905 Lce. Cpl. W. P. (Bottesford).
