Commander Charles Janson Smith Royal Navy was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross London Gazette 23rd February 1940 for his gallant and distinguished service aboard HMS Exeter in the battle of the River Plate, he was also Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 1st January 1943 for his services on the Staff of Rear Admiral (Destroyers) Mediterranean.
