He was the son of Thomas Standley, a general labourer, born 1843 in Leicestershire and his wife Eliza Standley (nee Hubbard, married in the 2nd quarter of 1865 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), born 1845 in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire. Elijah Jones was born in the 1st quarter of 1888 in Narborough, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 5th February 1888 in the parish church, Narborough, his siblings were, Alice, a domestic servant, born 1872 and baptised on the 20th July 1872 in the parish church, Narborough, Charles William, an elastic web weaver, born 1877 and baptised on the 7th January 1877 in the parish church, Narborough, Thomas Robert, a shoe trade worker, born 1878 and baptised on the 1st December 1878 in the parish church, Narborough and Francis Harry, a schoolboy, born 1886 and baptised on the 7th February 1886 in the parish church, Narborough, all his siblings were born in Narborough, in April 1891 the family home was in Littlethorpe Street, Narborough. In March 1899 Elijah’s father died aged 56 and he was interred on the 22nd March in Narborough parish churchyard. In March 1901 Elijah was employed as a gardener and was residing in the family home at Bell Yard, Main Street, Bell Lane, Narborough, together with his widowed mother and brother, Thomas, a shoe maker. In April 1911 Elijah was employed as a concrete labourer and was residing in the family home at Bell Yard, Main Road, Narborough, together with his widowed mother and brother, Thomas, a shoe trade riveter. Elijah also had the following older siblings, Harriett Eliza, born 1868 and baptised on the 12th April 1868 in the parish church, Narborough, George, born 1871 and baptised on the 28th May 1871 in the parish church, Narborough, Betsy Lavinia, born 1881 and baptised on the 3rd April 1881 in the parish church, Narborough, they were all born in Narborough. On the 25th December 1912, in the parish church, Enderby Elijah married Beatrice Bertha Sibson, Beatrice was born on the 31st January 1891 in Enderby, Leicestershire, they had a son Harry, born on the 8th July 1913 in Enderby and who was baptised on the 14th September 1913 in the parish church, Enderby. Beatrice married Harold F. Hopkins in the 1st quarter of 1923 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district. In 1939 Beatrice was residing in the family home at 36, John Street, Enderby, together with her husband Harold, a quarry road stone worker, born 9th October 1894. Beatrice’s younger brother, Albert James Sibson is also commemorated on the St. John the Baptist Church Memorial, Enderby.
Elijah was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
