He was the son of Edwin Henry Green, a gardener, born 1852 in Admaston, Shropshire and his wife Elizabeth (Eliza) Green (nee Holmes, born 1853 in Newtown Linford, Leicestershire. Herbert was born on the 20th December 1889 in Rothley, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 16th February 1890 in Rothley Parish Church, his siblings were, Charles, a shoe trade worker, born 1876 in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, Elizabeth, a schoolgirl, born 1878, George, a schoolboy, born 8th March 1882 and Frank, a schoolboy, born 1884, the latter three siblings were all born in Barford, Warwickshire, Edwin Henry, a schoolboy, born 1886 and Alfred, born 1888, the latter two siblings were both born in Rothley, in April 1891 the family home was at Town Green, Rothley. In March 1901 Herbert was residing in the family home at Narborough Road, Leicester, together with his father a gardener, his mother and siblings, Charles a boot trade laster, James a beer cellar man, George, a groom, Frank a wine cellar man, Edwin, an errand boy, Alfred, an errand boy, Richard, born 1893 and Elsie, born 1896, the latter two siblings were both born in Leicester. In April 1911 Herbert was absent from the family home in Victoria Street, Narborough, Leicestershire, residing there was his father, a domestic gardener, his mother and sister, Elsie, a silk winder, Herbert was employed as a jobbing gardener and was residing as a boarder at 39, Bulwer Road, Clarendon Park, Knighton, Leicester. Herbert married Annie Isabella Green, (nee Wall, married on the 19th November 1913 in Great Packington Parish Church, Warwickshire) Annie was born in 17th December 1894 in Great Packington, Warwickshire, and was baptised on the 3rd February 1895 in Great Packington Parish Church. At the time of his marriage Herbert was residing at 24, Edward Road, Clarendon Park, Knighton, Leicester. They had three children, Jessie, born in the 2nd quarter of 1914, Albert, born in the 1st quarter of 1915 and Elsie, born on the 7th December 1915, all the children were born in Leicester.
In 1939 Herbert’s remarried widow, Annie Amey was residing in the family home at 57, Knighton Church Road, Leicester, together with her husband Frank William Amey, a beer bottle store under foreman, born 29th September 1883 in Aston, Warwickshire and their son John Amey, a schoolboy, born 2nd January 1928. Herbert and Annie’s daughter Elsie Green, a shorthand typist, was also residing in the family home.
Herbert enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment and was transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
