He was the son of William Faulks. a coal agent, born 1850 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 17th March 1850 in Earl Shilton Parish Church and his wife Sarah Ann Faulks (nee Chamberlain, married on the 3rd November 1874 in Earl Shilton Parish Church), born 14th April 1852 in Earl Shilton and baptised on the 9th May 1852 in Earl Shilton Parish Church. James Henry was born in the 4th quarter of 1894 in Narborough, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 7th October 1894 in Narborough Parish Church, his siblings were, Mary Jane, an elastic cotton trade winder, born 27th November 1877 and baptised on the 30th December 1877 in Earl Shilton Parish Church and Alice Maud, an elastic cotton trade winder, born 1882 and baptised on the 9th July 1882 in Earl Shilton Parish Church, the latter two siblings were both born in Earl Shilton, George Harry, an apprentice stone mason, born 1884 and baptised on the 13th April 1884 in Earl Shilton Parish Church, Sidney, Marshall, born 23rd February 1888 and baptised on the 1st April 1888 in Narborough Parish Church, Horace William, born 1891 and baptised on the 15th March 1891 in Narborough Parish Church and Ernest Harold, born 21st October 1892 and baptised on the 7th October 1894 in Narborough Parish Church, in March 1901 the family home was in Littlethorpe, Leicestershire. In the 2nd quarter of 1907 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district, James’ father died, aged 57. In April 1911 James was employed as a boot trade machinist and was residing in the family home in Littlethorpe, together with his widowed mother and siblings, Sidney, an artificial stone finisher and Ernest, a boot trade machinist. James also had an older brother, James who was born on the 24th March 1881 in Earl Shilton and was baptised on the 8th April 1881 in Earl Shilton Parish Church, sadly he died on the 12th April, aged 19 days and was buried on the 16th April 1881 in Earl Shilton Parish Churchyard. In 1939 James’ widowed mother and brother Ernest, a boot and shoe trade worker were both residing in the family home in Cosby Road, Littlethorpe. James was officially recorded at birth with the surname Faulks, however there are a number of instances where the alternative spellings of Fawkes and Faulkes have been also used.
James first entered the theatre of war in France on the 29th July 1915, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals. He was also awarded the Military Medal for gallantry, London Gazette 6th August 1918.
The War Diary records: 25 Jul-18 - Our patrol encountered strong hostile patrol east of -?- cemetery P.23.d.3.4. Enemy were dispersed, two were probably killed. Our casualties nil. Front line shelled in afternoon with 77mm high explosive. Short bursts of fire at intervals.
