He was the son of William and Rose Helen Steele, and the husband of Mabel Steele. After enlistment and training in the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, he embarked for France in October 1915, and took part in the terrible fighting on the Somme where he was wounded on the 16th of August 1916, and again on the 4th May 1917 during the third Battle of Ypres. He died from influenza aggravated by his wounds. At the time of his death he had only been married for five weeks.
