He was the son of Thomas Ball a Painter and Publican, born 1866 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire and his wife Caroline, born 1864 in South Croxton, Leicestershire. Leonard Arthur was born in 1898 in South Croxton, Leicestershire, he had one sibling, a brother Ernest, born 1889 in Clarendon Park, Leicester. In March 1901 the family home was at The Golden Fleece Inn, Main Street, South Croxton, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Leonard was residing with his widowed mother at 65, Southampton Street, Leicester. His mother later remarried and became Mrs Caroline Sarson (formerly Ball).
