He was the son of William Bennington a Bricklayer, born 1857 in Langtoft, Lincs., and his wife Susannah, born 1857 in Northants. Charles Edward was born in 1895 in Oakham, Rutland, his siblings were Sarah, born 1880 in Market Deeping, Lincs., and Robert, born 1892 in Market Deeping, Lincs., in March 1901 the family home was at Melton Road, Oakham, Rutland, in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Oakham, All Saints. In April 1911 Charles was residing in the family home at Melton Road, Oakham, Rutland with his father. Prior to enlistment he was a bricklayer. He served in France, being shot through the head by a sniper.
