He was the son of Levi Berridge a Carrier, born 1855 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth Berridge (nee Ross), born 1855 in Birmingham, Warwks. In April 1881 the family home was at High Street, Edgware, Middx. In April 1891 John Ross Berridge who was born in 1885 in Chillington, Staffs., was a Schoolboy and was residing with his paternal grandparents John Berridge a General Dealer, born 1815 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth, born 1815 in Exton, Rutland, together with their children Fanny, born 1855 and Louisa, born 1861, the latter two sisters were born in Oakham, Rutland., John’s siblings were Louisa, born 1881 in Powick, Warwks and Elizabeth, born 1888 in Whissendine, Rutland, the family home was at South Street, Oakham, Rutland. In March 1901 John was employed as a Hairdresser’s Apprentice and was residing with his siblings, Louisa and Elizabeth at the home of his two aunts Fanny and Louisa Berridge, at Rosemary Cottage, 23, South Street, Oakham, Rutland in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Oakham, All Saints. In April 1911 John was employed as a Hairdresser and was residing with his wife of four years, Eva Rose Berridge (nee Dutton), born 1885 in Sevenoaks, Kent, together with their children, Percy, born 1907, Raymond, born 1909 and Margery, born 1910, all three children were born in Sevenoaks, Kent, the family were residing at The Laundry, Hartsland, Sevenoaks, Kent, being the family home of Henry Dutton, born 1853 in London and his wife Flora, born 1860 in Shoreham, Kent. John's mother died when he was four years old and he was adopted by his aunts, Fanny and Louisa Berridge, who bought him up in Oakham, Rutland. Prior to the war he ran a business in Hartsland’s Road, Sevenoaks, Kent, and was called up in May 1915. He embarked for France in October 1915 and served there and on the Belgian front taking part in many engagements until he was killed in action at Cambrai. He left a widow and five children, his wife died on the 13th November 1919.
