He was the son of Tom William Bland a Coal Porter, born 1862 in Empingham, Rutland and his wife Eliza, born 1863 in Oakham, Rutland. Benjamin was born in 1897 in Oakham, Rutland, his siblings were Frederick, born 1888, Annie, born 1893, Miriam, born 1895 and John Edward, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Oakham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Melton Road, Park Lane, Oakham, Rutland in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Oakham, All Saints. In April 1911 Benjamin was employed as a Butchers Errand Boy and was residing in the family home at Deans Street, Oakham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, John and Charles Henry, born 1902 in Oakham, Rutland.
