He was the son of Robert Broom a mason’s labourer, born 1855 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Emma, born 1857 in Oakham, Rutland. Walter was born in 1898 in Oakham, Rutland, his siblings were, John R., born 1886, Richard, born 1888 and Louisa, born 1891, all his siblings were born in Oakham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Deans Street, Oakham, Rutland. In April 1911 Walter was a scholar and was residing in the family home at South Street, Oakham, Rutland, together with his parents and sister Louisa, also residing with the family was his nephew Harry, born 1906 in Melton Mowbray, Leics. The Medal Index card shows that Walter was awarded the British and Victory medals, roll F/102 B15, page 1712.
