He was the son of David John and Amelia Drake. Other sources show his place of residence as Oakham, Rutland. When war was declared he was about twenty three years of age and was employed by Mr F. W. Hart a Grocer of Oakham, Rutland. Embarking for France in September 1915 he was wounded and taken prisoner on March 28th 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He died in captivity of septic poisoning.
