He was the son of George and Mary Ann Iliffe. He embarked for France in November 1916, and went through the whole war exposed to many dangers whilst working in the transportation branch of the Royal Engineers. He was proceeding home for demobilisation when the railway train in which he was travelling collided with another locomotive at Neufchatel, he suffered a fractured skull in the accident and
subsequently died from his injuries.
