He was the son of Richard and Ann Needham of Oakham, Rutland, and the husband of Annie Needham. The War Diary entry for the 15th May 1918 records. BRANDHOEK. Companies worked as follows:- “A” Company worked on posts in H.22.d.7.3. and H.23.c.9.0. widening, thickening of parapets and revetting. Loading Nissen Huts at H.23.c. central. “C” Company worked wiring the line of advanced posts from J.26.c.3.5. to J.31.a.0.3. “D” Company continued taking down and loading Nissen Huts at N.24.d and N.18.d and also took over part of “C” Company’s former work, ie. wiring, constructing breastwork and widening the INTERMEDIATE LINE at N.22.d.0.5., N.29.a.3.4. and N.29.a.7.7. HQ and Transport worked on various other work under the C.R.E. The Camp of this Battalion was shelled at about 1.30pm with 5.9 N.V. shells and 3 other ranks were killed and 3 were wounded. 2 other ranks were wounded on the work and evacuated, and 3 were sent to hospital sick.
