He was the son of Joseph Burton a quarry labourer, born 1864 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1868 in Quorn, Leics. Albert Henry was born in 1895 in Quorn, Leics., his siblings were, George E., born 1894, Frank William, born 1897, Mabel Emma, born 1899 and Joseph, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Quorn, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at New Quorn, Quorndon, Leics. In April 1911 Albert was employed as a general servant and was residing in the family home at Farmham Street, Quorn, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Ernest, Frank, Mabel, Maud Elizabeth, born 1904 and Sydney, born 1907, the latter two siblings were both born in Quorn, Leics., also residing with the family was his maternal uncle, George Wilmore a quarry man, born 1879 in Quorn, Leics. On Friday May 18th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “QUORN” – SERGEANT KILLED.- Information has been received that Sergt. Albert H. Burton, of the Leicester’s, was killed in action on April 27th. The news was conveyed to the parents at Quorn in a letter from officers of the company, who express their high appreciation of the deceased’s character and soldierly bearing, it is stated that he had been recommended for a commission. He enlisted in February 1915. And had been in France nearly two years. He was formerly employed at Messrs. Wright’s Mills. Two brothers have also served in the forces, and their father served nearly 19 years with the colours and in the reserve, being now in the Royal Defence Corps. On Friday June 1st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” – Tuesday’s list contained the following:- KILLED. LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. Burton, 17172 A. H. (Quorn). The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the Front Line, when at 2.30am Operational Order number 172 was received from Brigade, re: relief and was issued to Company’s. 1 officer and 8 re inforcements arrived from base. Relieved by 9th Norfolks in front line trenches, relief reported complete at 12.00 midnight. Casualties other ranks, A Company 1 killed and 7 wounded, C Company 5 killed and 5 wounded and D Company 2 wounded.
