He was the son of George Pick, a general labourer, born 1843 in Stonesby, Leicestershire and his wife Emma Pick (nee Stevenson, married on the 29th November 1869 in the Parish Church, Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire), born 1850 in Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire. John Henry was born in the 4th quarter of 1890 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Alfred Ernest, a stone quarry labourer, born 1870. Mary Elizabeth, a cotton trade weaver, born 3rd January 1874 and Catherine Ann, a cotton trade weaver, born 1876, the latter three siblings were all born in Barrow upon Soar, Eliza Annie, a schoolgirl, born 3rd May 1879, Charlotte, a schoolgirl, born 1884, Lucy, a schoolgirl, born 23rd December 1885 and George, born 27th April 1888, the latter four siblings were all born in Mountsorrel, in April 1891 the family home was in Main Street, Mountsorrel. In March 1901 John was residing in the family home in Hurds Yard, Main Street, Mountsorrel, together with his father, a county council road worker, his mother and siblings, Alfred, a stone quarry worker, Eliza, Charlotte, a cotton trade worker, Lucy, a cotton trade worker and George. In April 1911 John was employed as a quarry labourer and was residing in the family home in Main Street, Mountsorrel, together with his father, a county council road worker, his mother and sister, Eliza. John married Ada Bagley on the 18th September 1915 in the Parish Church, Quorn, Leicestershire, Ada was born on the 1st September 1889 in Quorn. In 1922 John’s widow married Henry Yeomans, born 15th March 1888, in 1939 they were residing at 9, Leicester Road, Quorn.
John’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Royal Engineers, being allotted the service number 196184, and was posted as a Sapper to the 198th Quarrying Company, and with this unit he first entered the theatre of war in France sometime after the 31st December 1915. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
