He was the son of John Baker an Engineer Fitter, born 1857 in Willenhall, Staffordshire and his wife Elizabeth, born 1861 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. Rowland James was a Brewers Labourer and was born in 1892 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a brother Peter, born 1894 in Leicester. In April 1911 the family home was at 49, Albert Street, Newark, Nottinghamshire.
