He was the son of George Burgess a grocery shop keeper, born 1855 in Enderby, Leics., and his wife Annie, born 1855 in Enderby, Leics., George Gambel Burgess was born in 1891 in Leicester, his siblings were, Annie Elsie, born 1882, Robert, born 1884 and Arthur, born 1887, all his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 1, Little Holme Street, Leicester. In April 1911 George was employed as a student for the teaching profession and was residing in the family home at 15, Briton Street, Leicester, together with his father, now a caretaker, his mother and siblings, Annie, Robert and Arthur. He was registered at birth with the second Christian name spelling of Gambel, however all later references to George show the spelling as Gamble.
