He was the son of the Reverend David Dewar, MA., a clergyman of the Church of England, born 1862 in Sheffield, Yorks., and his wife Annie Maria Irene Dewar (nee Hill), born 1859 in Chichester, Sussex. David was born in the 4th quarter of 1893 in Northampton, in March 1901 he was residing at Malting Yard, Hartwell, Pottersbury, Northants., this being the home of his widowed maternal grandmother, Charlotte B. Hill, who was living on her own means, born 1838 in Middx., also residing in the family home was his maternal aunt, Lilian C. Hill, born 1871 in Chichester, Sussex. His parents at this time were residing in the family home at St. Thomas’s Vicarage, 1, Blaby Road, Glen Parva, Leics., together with his siblings, Lancelot John Austen, born on the 8th October 1896 and Margaret Grace, born 1895, both his siblings were born in Northampton. In April 1911 David was a school pupil and was residing in at St. John’s School, Epsom Road, Leatherhead, Surrey. His parents at this time were now residing in the family home at 8, Melbourne Street, Leicester, together with his sibling, Lancelot who was a schoolboy. David’s parents later resided at Holy Trinity Vicarage, Loughborough, Leics., his father died on the 5th August 1921, aged 59 and his widowed mother later resided at 31, Gledhow Gardens, South Kensington, Middx. David (Sonnie) Dewar, a Temporary Lieutenant was Mentioned in Despatches whilst serving with the 14th Battalion Machine Gun Corps. His younger brother, Lancelot also fell. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour of former pupils, this records that David attended the school between the years 1902 and 1903.
