He was the son of John Thomas Gutheridge of 72, Gladstone Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, Framework Knitter, and his wife Sarah Jane, who was the daughter of Solomon Charles. John was educated at the Higher Elementary School, Loughborough, Leicestershire, and on leaving became an apprentice Joiner. He subsequently emigrated to New Zealand and continued his trade in joinery. He enlisted in the New Zealand Rifles on the on the 3rd April 1917, and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the 23rd October 1917 until he was killed in action on the 7th January 1918. He was buried at Zonnebeke, Belgium. His Commanding Officer wrote, “Your son died doing his duty for his Empire and his loved ones, respected by all his mates.” John was unmarried. His record of service gives the following information, he embarked with the 26th Reinforcements “G” Company (part) on the 9th June 1917 from Wellington, New Zealand aboard HMNZT 85 “Willochra” bound for Devonport, England.
