He was the son of Herbert and Hannah Maria Holmes, and the husband of Jessie (nee Dyer) Holmes. He was the father of Flying Officer Ernest Dyer Holmes, No. 4 Flying Training Unit, who was accidentally killed on the 9th December 1953. His enlistment documents record that he gave his wife Mrs Jessie Holmes of General Delivery, Reaburn, Manitoba, Canada as his next of kin. He gave his trade or calling as Rancher. He stated that he belonged to the Active Militia serving in the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers, additionally he he had served for 4 years in the Leicestershire Yeomanry. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 11 ¼ inches in height and had a chest measurement of 35 ½ to 38 inches. His complexion was described as ruddy with blue eyes and fair hair. He gave his religion as Church of England. Other sources show his place of birth as Loughborough, Leics.
