He was the son of William and Mary Ann Hopkins of Loughborough, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his mother, Mary Ann Hopkins of Wead Lane, Loughborough, Leics., England as his next of kin. He gave his trade of calling as Plaster – Saloier? And stated he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 7 inches in height and had a chest measurement of 34 to 37 inches. His complexion was described as dark with blue eyes and black hair. It was noted that he had two toes missing. He gave his religion as Church of England.
