The War Diary for today records. The enemy’s first line appeared to be occupied in strength during the night and they were constantly on the alert. Work was proceeding at various points but only very occasionally did anyone expose himself. One patrol of 1 officer and a man went out from 11B and occupied a shell hole about 30 yards from the enemy’s line, but saw or heard nothing unusual, and no working parties or patrols. Another patrol went out in the scrub at 1.15am and heard noises of working and a lot of talking in the enemy line about F7. On their return rapid fire was directed on the enemy at this point. This appeared to alarm them as they sent up some flares and opened rapid fire on our trenches.Work on the bunds was continued. The exits of the Sally Posts (except 2) were blocked, bunds round them completed and the wire replaced in front. Two Privates were wounded during the performance of this work. Enemy snipers were quiet during the day, but became very active towards evening and at night. About 3.30pm an enemy working party was observed near the east end of the communication trench south of F7. This was reported to the F.O.O. who opened shrapnel on them.
