He was the son of James Sutton, a general labourer, born 1858 in Loughborough, Leics., and his wife Harriet Sutton (nee Goodwin, married 1879), born 1859 in Loughborough, Leics. William, was born in 1887 in Loughborough, Leics., in April 1891 his siblings were Clara, a schoolgirl, born 1880, Walter, a schoolboy, born 1882, Edith, a schoolgirl, born 1884 and Agnes, a schoolgirl, born 1886, all his siblings were born in Loughborough, Leics., the family home was at 11, Chapman Street, Loughborough, Leics. In March 1901 William was employed as an errand boy and was residing in the family home at 48, Sparrow Hill, Loughborough, Leics., together with his father, now a water main worker, his mother and siblings, Clara, a hosiery trade mender, Walter a gas fitter, Edith a hosiery trade mender, Agnes a hosiery trade runner on, Ethel, born 1892 and Kate, born 1894, the latter two siblings were both born in Loughborough, Leics. In April 1911 William was employed as a hosiery trade worker, and was residing in the family home at 8, Shakespeare Street, Loughborough, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Ethel, a hosiery trade seamer and Kate, a hosiery trade worker. In the third quarter of 1912, William married Mary Emily Walton in the Loughborough, Leicestershire marriage registration district. The War Diary for today records. ENGLEBELMER. Followed through LE SARS to EAUCOURT L’ABBE. 2.00pm. Hostile counter attack repulsed by Battalion at latter place, after which a defensive flank to Division was formed facing south.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

Private William Sutton (30), Leicester, late manager of Messrs. Handford and Miller’s branch at Whitwick, has been killed in action. He had been with the firm since leaving school, and to his honour, the flag at the Loughborough factory was at half-mast on Wednesday. His widow lives in Leopold Street, Loughborough.
