He was the son of George Ward, a coal waggoner, born 1867 in Loughborough, Leicestershire and his wife Ada Ward (nee Miller, married in the 1st quarter of 1884 in the Loughborough, Leicestershire district), born 1864 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. George Arthur was born in the 4th quarter of 1887 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, he had one sibling, a sister Alice, born 1891 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, in April 1891 the family home was at Green Close Lane, Loughborough, Leicestershire. In March 1901 George was employed as an errand boy and was residing in the family home at 39, Granville Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire, together with his father a stoker, his mother and siblings, Alice and Ethel, born 1898 in Loughborough, Leicestershire. In April 1911 George was employed as a builder’s carter and was residing in the family home at 39, Granville Street, Loughborough, Leicestershire together with his father, a gas works stoker, his mother and siblings, Alice, a hosiery trade brusher, Ethel, a schoolgirl and Frank, a schoolboy, born 1903 in Loughborough, Leicestershire.
The War Diary for the day recorded that the Battalion were in the Verlorenhoer Road – Wieltje trenches, intermittent shelling by 5.9 inch Howitzer and shrapnel, two men wounded. Lieutenant A. Wayman appointed Acting Adjutant vice Captain G. S. W. Tidewell DSO appointed Brigade Major.
On Friday July 30th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR.” LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT CASUALTIES. – The following casualties in the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment are reported under date 17th July:-
