ContributeSource: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland. He was the son of Arthur Wootton and Clara Hackett. Douglas had been employed as a Cowman prior to his enlistment. On the 31st January 1920 the Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys in Leicester published a Roll of Honour of former pupils, this records that Douglas attended the school between the years 1909 and 1911. Information recorded on Army Form W 5080 dated the 1st May 1919 gave the following family details, he left three brothers, Arthur Wootton, aged 26 residing in Hoby, Leics., Percy, aged 21 and Gordon Lionel aged 11, and two sisters, Gertrude Maud, aged 29 and Nora aged 21 all residing at The Priory, Ratcliffe on the Wreake, Leics. His service records show that he entered the theatre of war in France on the 3rd September 1916, joining 142nd Siege Battery on the 14th October 1916. On the 28th March 1917 he was admitted to the General Hospital in St. Omer suffering from German Measles, rejoining his unit on the 6th April 1917. He was recorded as suffering shell shock whilst in action on the 23rd May 1917, being admitted to No. 4 Stationary Hospital, Arques St. Omer, he rejoined his unit on the 23rd June. He died from a gun shot wound on the 31st July 1917 in 134th Field Ambulance.
