He was the son of Thomas Goodson Roberts, a groom, born 1858 in Redmile, Leicestershire and his wife Emma Roberts, born 1864 in Freeby, Leicestershire. Albert Edward was born in the 4th quarter of 1890 in Redmile, he had one sibling, George William, a schoolboy, born 1885 in Redmile, in April 1891 the family home was at West Side Street, Redmile. In March 1901 Albert was residing in the family home at Rectory Lane, Redmile, together with his father, a domestic groom, his mother and siblings, George, Thomas Goodson, born in the 1st quarter of 1894 and Charles Cecil, born 1899, the latter two siblings were both born in Redmile. In April 1911 Albert was serving as a Driver with the 76th Battery Royal Field Artillery. He first entered the theatre of war on the 17th November 1914, and was taken as a Prisoner of War on the 29th April 1916. He was shown to have been held in Konia, between the 18th September 1916 and the 4th November 1916. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals. His brother Thomas Goodson also died.
