He was the grandson of Joseph Chettle an agricultural labourer, born 1837 in Redmile, Leics., and his wife Martha, born 1839 in Barrowby, Lincs. Charles William was born in 1887 in Redmile, Leics., in April 1891 he was residing at West Side Street, Redmile, Leics., this being the family home of his paternal grandparents and their children, William H., born 1877, Rose, born 1879, Samuel C., born 1881, Gertrude M., born 1882 and Mildred, born 1885, all his uncles and aunts were born in Redmile, Leics. In March 1901 Charles was employed as a news boy and was residing at Main Street, Redmile, Leics., together with his paternal grandparents and their daughter (his aunt) Gertrude, also residing with the family was his sister Winifred M., born 1899 in Redmile, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a domestic gardener and was residing at Redmile, Leics., together with his widowed paternal grandmother, now a general dealer and his sister Winifred. In the April, May, June quarter of 1914, Charles married Gertrude Judson in the Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire marriage registration district. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the front line. At 4.20pm Operational Order, Brigade number 213 received cancelling number 212. By the Operational Order the 9th Norfolks relieve the 9th Suffolks and we remain in trenches, this is owing to the fact that the Sherwood Foresters are finding a Guard of Honour to the King and Queen. Casualties, other ranks A Company 5 wounded, B Company 1 wounded.
