He was the son of William Benham a Farm Labourer, born 1862 in Branston, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1862 in Barkston, Leics. Bertie was a Domestic Carter and was born in 1888 in Harrow on the Hill, Middx., his siblings were Harry, born 1885 in Paddington, London, Kate, born 1890, Albert, born 1894, Thomas, born 1897, Annie, born 1898, Leonard, born 1900 and George, born 1904, the latter six siblings were all born in Redmile, Leics., in April 1911 the family home was at Redmile, Leics.
