He was the son of Mr and Mrs Sarah Rudkin. He was a gardener before enlistment into the 12th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment, being subsequently transferred to the 1st Battalion. He embarked on foreign service in August 1916 serving in France and Belgium. He died as a result of an apoplectic stroke, that occurred in the 41st Casualty Clearing Station, France. He was buried in Proyart-Communal Cemetery Extension, south of Bray-Sur-Somme. Prior to joining he had been an active member of his church, serving as a choir member and bell ringer.
