He was the son of William Antill, a hosiery trade warehouseman, born 1873 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire and his wife Edith Emily Herbert, a hosiery trade embroiderer, born 1875 in Rothley, Leicestershire. Herbert was born on the 19th September 1899 in Rothley and was baptised on the 7th October 1900 in Christ Church, Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, he had one sibling, a sister Mabel, born 1897 in Rothley, in March 1901 the family home was at Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley. In April 1911 Herbert was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Anthony Street, Rothley, together with his father, a hosiery trade factory foreman, his mother a hosiery trade embroiderer and his sister Mabel, a hosiery trade seamstress. Herbert died in the 57th Casualty Clearing Station, Aubigny, France from wounds received in action, he was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
On Friday June 14th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” – The official casualty lists published during the week have included the following names relating to this district:- From Monday’s list:- Died of Wounds.
