He was the son of Walter Wilfred Bishop a Domestic Gardener, born 1868 in Bewdley, Worcs., and his wife Alice Mary, born 1869 in Leamington, Warwks. Walter Leslie was born in 1899 in Leamington, Warwks., his siblings were Doris Kathleen, born 1897 and Eva Winifred, born 1899, both his siblings were born in Birmingham, Warwks., in March 1901 the family home was at 48, Leicester Street, Leamington Priors, Leamington, Warwks., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Leamington Priors, St. Paul. In April 1911 Walter was a Schoolboy and also a Newsboy and was residing in the family home at Woodgate, Rothley, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Doris, Eva, Ruth Lilian, born 1902 in Leamington, Warwks., Hilda Kitty, born 1903 and Eric Osmond, born 1905, the latter two siblings were both born in Coventry, Warwks., also residing with the family was William Henry Wall, a cousin and widower, born 1847 in Birmingham, Warwks. The War Diary for today records. GORRE, RIGHT. At 3.30am. Enemy fired 6 – 10 minute bursts of hurricane fire with guns of all calibres onto front line system, particularly heavy round ROUTE A KEEP and TUNING FORK. Direct hits were obtained on our trenches in several places but casualties were comparatively slight. During remainder of day enemy were quiet in front line. Work went on very rapidly on new piece of RESERVE LINE. At 9.15pm. Enemy suddenly shelled working party of the 4th Battn LEICESTERSHIRE REGT on RESERVE LINE with 10.5 cm High Explosive and Blue X. About 60 rounds fired and no casualties caused, though owing to presence of gas work had to be stopped in that section for the night. Otherwise night quiet in forward areas though back areas fairly heavily shelled. Some rain.
