He was the son of Albert Buswell a hosiery trade trimmer, born 1858 in Leicester and his wife Mary Ann, born 1863 in Leicester. Matthew was born in 1893 in Leicester, his siblings were, Ellen, born 1890 and Albert, born 1896, both his siblings were born in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 12, Watling Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Matthew was employed as a shoe trade worker and was residing in the family home at 30, Watling Street, Leicester, together with his parents and siblings, Nellie (Ellen), Albert and Judith Doris, born 1903 in Leicester.
