He was the son of John Emery, an agricultural labourer, born 1866 in Sheepy Magna, Leics., and his wife Hannah Emery (nee Bolstridge, married q4 1885 in the Atherstone Warwks. district), born 1866 in Ratcliffe Culey, Leics. Harry was born on the 13th December 1890 in Sheepy Magna, Leics., his siblings were, Polly E., born 1888 and Emily M, born 1889, the latter two siblings were both born in Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Orton Lane, Sheepy Magna, Leics. In March 1901 Harry was residing in the family home at Orton Lane, Sheepy Magna, Leics., together with his father, a farm wagoner, his mother and siblings, Emily and Harriett, born 1893 in Sheepy Magna, Leics. The family later resided at Cross Hands, Sheepy Magna, Leics. Harry enlisted into the Royal Navy to serve a 12 year engagement on the 31st October 1906, his reckonable service to commence on the 13th December 1908 and he was allocated the service number 237705 in Plymouth, Devon. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 9¾ inches in height, his hair colour was dark brown and his eyes were grey, his complexion was described as dark, it was noted that he had a small scar near his right nipple and a small scar on the left side of his face, he gave his trade or calling as farm servant. When he attained the age of 18 years his re-examination recorded that his height was 5 foot 10½ inches, and his complexion was described as sallow. His record of service began when he joined HMS Ganges as a Boy 2nd Class on the 31/10/06 – 17/6/07, when he was promoted to Boy 1st Class. HMS Ganges, 18/6/07 – 5/7/07. HMS Warrior, 6/7/07 – 16/9/07. HMS Hogue, 17/9/07 – 22/12/07. HMS Vivid I, 23/12/07 – 24/1/08. HMS Niobe, 25/1/08 – 27/4/08. HMS Suffolk, 28/4/08 – 12/12/08, when he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman. HMS Suffolk, 13/12/08 – 14/6/09, when he was promotred to Able Bodied Seaman. HMS Suffolk, 15/6/09 – 2/5/10. HMS Vivid I, 3/5/10 – 10/12/10. HMS Defiance, 11/12/10 – 29/3/11. HMS Blake, 30/3/11 – 10/11/12. HMS Vivid I, 11/11/12 – 9/2/13. HMS Defiance, 10/2/13 – 4/4/13. HMS Orion, 5/4/13 – 3/2/14. HMS Vivid I, 4/2/14 – 16/3/14. HMS Pactolus, 17/3/14 – 27/4/15. HMS Bonetta, 28/4/15 – 24/3/16. HM Submarine E.37, 25/3/16 – 3/12/16, when he was reported lost on duty. The circumstances in which Harry lost his life are as follows. HM Submarine E37 was lost in the North Sea on 1st December 1916. There were no survivors.
