He was the son of William Hubbard, a general labourer, born 1858 in Sileby, Leics., and his wife Frances Hubbard (nee Taylor, married q1 1885 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leics. district), born 1857 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. Joseph was born on the 3rd October 1895 in Sileby, Leics., his siblings were, Hannah, a shoe trade worker, born 1886 and John Henry, a shoe trade worker, born 1886, the latter two siblings were both born in Sileby, Leics., William, born 1890 in Langar, Notts., Elizabeth Ann, born 1894 in Barnstone, Notts., and Rose Emma, born 1899 in Sileby, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Barrow Road, Sileby, Leics. In April 1911 Joseph was employed as a labourer and was residing in the family home at Barrow Road, Sileby, Leics., together with his father, a general labourer, his mother, a boot trade machinist and his siblings, Elizabeth, shoe stockroom worker and Rose, a schoolgirl. Joseph enlisted into the Royal Navy to serve a 5 + 7 year engagement on the 5th January 1914, he was allocated the service number SS/4578 in Portsmouth, Hants. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 2½ inches in height and he had a chest measurement of 32½ inches, his hair colour was auburn and his eyes were bluish grey, his complexion was described as pale, it was noted that he had a scar on his right hip and a mole just above the scar, he gave his trade or calling as shoe hand. His record of service began when he joined HMS Victory I as an Ordinary Seaman on the 5/1/14 – 14/3/14. HMS Duncan, 15/3/14 – 3/6/14. HMS Queen, 4/6/14 – 4/7/16, when he was promoted to Able Bodied Seaman. HMS Queen, 5/7/16 – 31/10/18, when he died from lobar pneumonia and cardiac failure in the 79th General Hospital, Taranto, Italy.
