He was the son of William Hubbard, a labourer, born 1858 in Sileby, Leics., and his wife Frances, born 1857 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. William was born in 1890 in Langar, Notts., his siblings were, Hannah, a schoolgirl, born 1886 and John Henry, born 1888, both his siblings were born in Sileby, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Wallwins Cottage, Cropwell Road, Langar, Notts. In March 1901 William was residing in the family home at Barrow Road, Sileby, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Hannah, a shoe factory worker, John, a shoe factory worker, Elizabeth Ann, born 1894 in Barkestone, Leics., Josh, born 1896 and Rose Emma, born 1899, the latter two siblings were both born in Sileby, Leics. In April 1911 William was serving as a Private with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was stationed at Talavera Barracks, Wellington Lines, Aldershot, Hants. On Friday March 5th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “DISTRICT WAR ITEMS.” – SILEBY’S ROLL OF HONOUR. – We regret to record the death of another of our Sileby brave lads, making a total now of eight. The latest victim is Mr. W. Hubbard, aged 27, and single. The sad news was received through a Sileby companion of Hubbard’s, named Percy Yates, who was fighting in France by his side, both being reservists of the 1st Leicester’s. Yates has written to Hubbard’s parents stating that Hubbard was shot last Sunday week through the throat, and fell at his feet. The poor fellow died within two or three minutes after receiving the shot. The War Diary for the day records that the Battalion were in trenches in the Rue de Bois, seventy reinforcements joined, quiet all day. Two Company’s of The Cameronians were attacked. Casualties one man was killed. Relieved by the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) at 6.00pm and into Divisional Reserve in Armentieres.
