He was the son of Thomas Mee, a hosiery trade framework knitter, born 1843 in Quorn, Leics., and his domestic servant, housekeeper, Elizabeth Wood, born 1868 in Arnold, Notts. George Mee Wood was born in August 1898 in Quorn, his siblings were, Florence Hannah Mee Wood, born 1894, Thomas Mee Wood, born 1896 and William Mee Wood, born 1900, all his siblings were born in Quorn, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at The Cottage, Meeting Street, Quorn, Leics. In April 1911, George’s father was employed as a farm labourer, and was residing as a boarder at Meeting Street, Quorn, Leics., George was a schoolboy and was residing as an inmate in the Barrow upon Soar, Leics., Union Workhouse, together with his mother, a factory lace mender and his siblings, George, a schoolboy, William, a schoolboy, Elizabeth, a schoolgirl, born 1902 and John Robert, a schoolboy, born 1904, the latter two siblings were both born in Quorn, Leics. George’s father died in the 2nd quarter of 1927, aged 84.
George enlisted on a Short Service engagement (Duration of the War) at Glen Parva Barracks, Leics., on the 4th September 1916, he gave his age as 18 years and 19 days, his trade or calling as bricklayer’s labourer, and his home address as 66, Cemetery Road, Sileby, Leics. His medical examination record gave his height as 5 foot 3 inches and his chest measurement as 31½ to 33½ inches, his religion as Church of England and his father, Thomas Wood, of 66, Cemetery Road, Sileby, Leics., as his next of kin. His service records show the following:- 8/9/16 posted to the 2nd/7th Battalion Cheshire Regiment. 16/12/16 transferred to 3rd/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. 5/4/17 posted to 7th Reserve Battalion Middlesex Regiment. 1/9/17 posted to 41st Training Battalion Depot, Middlesex Regiment. 2/9/17 embarked Folkestone. 2/9/17 and disembarked Bouloge, France joining 1st/7th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. 9/9/17 posted to 16th (Public Schools) Battalion Middlesex Regiment. 4/10/17 admitted to the 87th Field Ambulance (1st/1st West Lancs.), suffering from a gunshot wound to the head (brain protruding). 4/10/17 admitted to the 12th Casualty Clearing Station (Mendinghem, Belgium), where he died from his wounds on the 9/10/17. Total service 1 year 36 days. Awarded the British and Victory Medals. Full blood brother’s of soldier, Thomas Mee Wood, age 23 a serving soldier of Home Service, William Mee Wood, age 19, a serving soldier on Home Service, John Mee Wood, age 14 of Meeting Street, Quorn, Leics. Full blood sister’s of soldier, Florence Mee Wood, age 25, in service at Mountsorrel Road, Quorn, Leics., Elizabeth Mee Wood, age 17, of Soar Road, Quorn, Leics. George was wounded during the Battle of Broodseinde, this commenced on the 4th October 1917, being towards the end of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, his Battalion was part of the 86th Brigade of the 29th Division.
