Oliver was the son of John Charles and Annie Crowdell, of Smeeton Westerby.

Market Harborough Advertiser March 29th 1946 printed two announcements from the family of Oliver Crowdell:

In Memoriam- On Active Service

Crowdell- In loving memory of our dear Son and Brother, Oliver, who died as a result of an accident in a POW camp in Japan, March 28th 1945.- From Mother, Dad, and Sister Sylvia.
