He was the son of William Warrington, an agricultural labourer, born 1850 in Barsby, Leicestershire and his wife Frances Warrington (nee Underwood, married in the 1st quarter of 1875 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district), born 1850 in Hungerton, Leicestershire. James was born in the 2nd quarter of 1881 in South Croxton, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Elizabeth Warrington Underwood, a schoolgirl, born 1874, Henry, a schoolboy, born 1877 and Ann, born 1878, all his siblings were born in South Croxton, in April 1881 the family home was at South Croxton. In April 1891 James was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Boakin Square, South Croxton, together with his father, and agricultural labourer, his mother and sister Mary, a schoolgirl, born 1886 in South Croxton. In March 1901 James was employed as a farm carter and was residing in the family home at Westhorp, South Croxton, together with his father, an agricultural labourer, his mother and siblings, Harry, an agricultural labourer, Mary, Tamar, born 1894 and William, born 1895, the latter two siblings were both born in South Croxton. In April 1911 James was employed as a farm cowman and was residing in the family home at Foxton, Leicestershire, together with his wife Susannah Warrington (nee Osborn, married in the 4th quarter of 1902 in the Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire district), born 1884 in Waltham, Leicestershire and their children, Jane, born 1903 and James, born 1905, the latter two children were both born in South Croxton and Thomas, born 1909 in Beeby, Leicestershire, there were two further children of the marriage, Susan, born 1913 and Lilley, born 1916, both children were born within the Leicestershire district.
The War Diary records that the Battalion had relieved the Sherwood Foresters on the Forward Cottage Line on the 8th May, the report for 11th May stated that the front line was shelled heavily at times during the day. Shelling on B 15 and B 16 being especially heavy. Our Field Guns shelled (2 salvoes) Canadian dugouts 8.00pm. About midnight a patrol consisting of a Lewis gun and 2 gunners went out under Lieutenant C.H.O.D. Burrell, the vicinity of the Canadian dugouts was searched but nothing was found. No enemy seen.
On Friday May 26th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” - SOMERBY. – LOCAL SOLDIER KILLED. It is with regret we announce the death of Pte. James Warrington of the Leicesters. Official intimation was received by his wife on Friday that he was killed in action on May 11th, somewhere in France. Deceased leaves a wife and four children to mourn their loss and much sympathy is felt for them in their bereavement.
On Friday June 9th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – LOCAL CASUALTIES. The following local casualties reported under various dates have been issued during the past week:- Killed: Leicestershire Regiment: Sharpe, 16405 Private W. (Sileby), Warrington, 16971 Private J. (Somerby). Wounded: Lincolnshire Regiment: Bellamy, 11840 Private G. H. (Melton Mowbray). Wounded: Shock – Shell: Leicestershire Regiment: Yates, 9115 Private P. (Sileby). Killed: Leicestershire Regiment: Auger, 12022 Lance Corporal W. (Melton Mowbray).
