On Friday March 23rd 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “SOMERBY” – SOLDIER’S DEATH.- The village has lost another of its inhabitants doing his duty for his country, this making the fifth. The latest victim is Pte. E. Mould of the Northumberland Fusiliers. In private life he followed the vocation of painter and decorator, and from Dec. 14th 1914 to Nov. 15th 1916, belonged to the V.R. squad of the village. He was called up on Nov. 5th 1916 to join the colours, and while in training took a chill, pneumonia set in and he was removed to Colchester Military Infirmary, where he only lived about three days, and succumbed on the 7th March. By request of the relatives the mortal remains were sent home on Tuesday by the Military from Colchester to John o’ Gaunt Station. The coffin was conveyed from there to his home by the Volunteers. The funeral was arranged for Wednesday afternoon, and was carried out entirely by the V.T.C. members with full military honours. The bearers were Corpl. E. Hill, Pte’s W. Sturman, J. Jebb, L. Meadows, F. Smith and D. Hornbuckle. The firing party consisted of Corpl’s. H. Ashby, S. Hayes, W. Watts, Pte’s. H. Black, N. Hollingshead and H. Pitcher. Corpl. The Rev. G. E. Britten conducted the service. There were numerous friends to witness the ceremony, which was under the leadership of Q.M.S. A. E. Hayes and Sergt.-Instructor F. G. Pepper.
