He was the son of William Henry Sturgess, a railway carriage examiner, born 1867 in Wigston, Leics., and his wife Sarah Jane Sturgess (nee Sturman), born 1870 in Todmorden, Yorks. John Henry was a railway carriage repairer and was born in 1892 in Wigston, Leics., his siblings were, Francis Walter, a schoolboy, born 1898 and George Herbert, a schoolboy, Born 1901, both his siblings were born in Wigston, Leics., in April 1911 the family home was at 4, Clifford Street, South Wigston, Leics. His parents later resided at 14, Brentry Avenue, Lawrence Hill, Bristol, Glos. On Thursday January 25th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “ROLL OF HONOUR” - “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” The following local casualties are reported under various dates. All are Private’s except where otherwise shown. The town shown against each soldiers name is the home of his next-of-kin. KILLED. COLDSTREAM GUARDS. Sturgess, 13975 Lance-Corpl. J. H. (S. Wigston).
